ADGA Conference: Training - Why It Matters

Few Australian breeders invest in the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) Conference BUT we do.

Attending Wisconsin in 2024 was an educational journey of a lifetime. We completed intensive modules that combine classroom theory with ring-side practice and herd visits. The result is a shared language for quality – so our selections are consistent, transparent, and reproducible.

What we studied  (and how it helps you)

Judges Training & Ring Procedure

How judges prioritise structure, balance and function under time pressure. Benefit: We breed toward traits that actually get rewarded – traits that last in real herds

Linear Appraisal (LA)

Scoring individual traits (e.g, feet/legs shoulder assembly, mammary) against an ideal standard. Benefit: Objective, trait-by-trait decisions replace “pretty pictures” and fad chasing

Age-Progression Photography

Honest, repeatable photos over time to track how animals mature. Benefit: Buyers see true development – not just a staged photograph or flattering moment.

Records,Biosecurity & Data Integrity

Practical frameworks for ID, pedigrees , DNA, and herd health. Benefit: Clear paper trails and confidence in what you’re buying and breeding.

What we brought home (deliverables YOU can see)

Trait checklists we share with buyers so decisions are transparent

LA-style notes for our keepers and sale animals

Documented AI protocols that minimise risk and maximise conception

Why this is different in Australia

Portable, not political: The standards don’t depend on who’s in your circle; they’re measurable and repeatable.

Better outcomes: When everyone speaks the same “trait” language, pedigrees, show results, and buyer expectations line up.

How this shapes our program at Kamalaya Farm

We select for soundness, longevity and mammary quality first – then refine style

We publish records and photo progressions so client’s can evaluate with us.

Quick FAQ

Q: Is Linear Appraisal the same as a show win?

A: No – LA is trait-by-trait and repeatable. Shows are comparative on the day. We use both.

Q:Do you sell semen ONLY to advanced programs?

A: We place genetics with breeders who share our welfare standards and record discipline. We’re happy to help new breeders adopt the system
