The Nigerian Dwarf
The Nigerian Dairy goat is a miniature dairy goat originating from West Africa. Although the breed is only a few years young in Australia, they are becoming increasingly popular due to their small size, inquisitive, intelligent personalities along with of course, their dairy characteristics. Because of their smaller size they dont require as much land or feed as some of their bigger relatives and their friendly natures make them wonderful pets.
A healthy Nigerian doe can produce a huge amount of rich milk for her size – up to two litres a day or more. In addition, Nigerian goat milk is higher in butterfat (6-10%) and higher in protein than milk from most other dairy goat breeds. The sweet, rich milk is perfect for cheesemaking, yogurts, butter, and ice cream, and after the kids are weaned, we use the milk as a staple in our kitchen. Nigerian Goat enthusiasts either raise their goats for milk while others just love them for the friendship that these little ones bring. We call them our ‘vegetarian dogs’.
